Beefing Up Food Security in Monroe and Shelby Counties
In celebration of May's National Beef Month, the Monroe, and Shelby County Cattlemen's Association, in collaboration with University of Missouri Extension and C&R Market, undertook a meaningful initiative to promote healthy protein consumption and support local families. Together, they provided more than 400 pounds of ground beef to community members in Shelby and Monroe counties through food banks in Bethel, Faith Walk Ministries, Monroe City, and Shelbina. This effort helped improve food security by providing one pound of beef to local residents in need. The participating food banks demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing food insecurity while also encouraging nutritious dietary choices within their communities.
The distribution of ground beef also served as a celebration of National Beef Month, which recognizes the importance of beef production in the United States and its role as a valuable source of protein. "May's celebration of Beef Month highlights the significance of beef production in the United States, emphasizing its role as an essential protein source. By leveraging this national recognition, the partnership aims to raise awareness about the importance of incorporating beef into a balanced diet," said Jess Unterbrink Monroe, and Shelby County Cattlemen's Association representative.
As more people become aware of the importance of maintaining a balanced diet, community partnerships such as this continue to play an important role in supporting healthier lifestyles. Carrie Elsen stated, "This event helps promote healthy home-cooked meals and encourages community members to make healthier choices for themselves and their families. MU Extension aims to foster healthier habits and improve overall well-being by supporting communities with educational resources and meal planning initiatives."
