Derailment on Highway 24 Leads to Fatal Accident

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, On May 20, 2023, two miles east of Madison, Missouri in Monroe County, Russell Minnis, 65 of Higbee, Missouri was eastbound in a 2017 Freightliner who failed to stop at the railroad crossing and was struck by Norfolk Southern Locomotive, westbound which was equipped with a crossbar, bell, and warning light.
Minnis was pronounced deceased by Monroe County Coroner Jim Reinhard at the scene at 1530 hours.

As of May 22, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department shared an update from crews on the scene indicating that the roadway will likely not be open until Wednesday, May 24th. There are signs indicating the road is closed along US 24 both east and west of the crossing. Please use alternate routes if you need to get back and forth between Madison and Holliday. Please be aware that the signs in place are for the motoring public's safety. There have been issues with people moving signs and barricades, specifically near Route AA.
